FAQ
Who is this zine open to?
The zine is organized around themes in landscape architecture practice. As a field that works in dialogue with experts across disciplines, we welcome submissions from practitioners in all fields that shape and reflect on the built environment through design, art making, performance, gardening and horticulture, public policy, or other creative practices.
What makes a good pitch?
Zines offer an opportunity to use image making to recontextualize existing materials and to highlight spicy, inspiring ideas. We are interested in unearthing the lessons and provocations that unbuilt proposals can offer future landscape practice. Good pitches will describe or demonstrate how existing visual materials can be remixed, reframed, collaged, or annotated to reflect on the work and challenge current discourse. We are especially interested in proposals that will use the short, graphic format as a vehicle for playfulness, loving criticism, and identifying new paths forward.
This first issue will focus on Infrastructure and establish questions – provocations for continued discussion. The subsequent issue(s) will include responses to those ideas. Consider how your work will inspire debate and discussion among your peers.
Can I submit more than one idea?
We love your enthusiasm, but we ask that each individual submit only one idea per call.
What is a zine? What kinds of submissions are you expecting?
We’ve compiled a brief gallery of zines for reference:
The Strongest Creature on Earth by Michael Chlebowski 2008
Endless Spirals by Jeff Oishi & Christa Donner 2008
Feminist Zines in Cornell’s Archive
C4 Journal
Hera Skate
90s Riot Girl
Your submission can be created through digital, analogue, or hybrid methods. We encourage experimentation. Note that you will submit a digital copy and we will compile submissions and coordinate printing.
Can teams participate?
We welcome team submissions and collaborative work – share the workload and the credit.
Can my submission reflect on design work that is not my own?
The zine is a space for reflecting on the potency of unrealized design projects. Submissions can reflect on design work that you developed or can reflect on the design work of others. The contributing author (or authors) should create the images and text of the submission. Authors are encouraged to write in the first person – zines are pithy and personal. The submission should clearly indicate the project’s design team.
How will pitches be evaluated?
Pitches will be reviewed based on a combination of analytical and aesthetic merits. We aim include a diversity of perspectives and project types that reflect the depth of current landscape inquiry with a particular focus on amplifying overlooked ideas.
How many projects will be accepted?
Our printing format allows 15 projects per issue. We are pursuing support for future issues.
